Freedom Communications, owners of the newspaper the Orange County Register, have decided to settle the class-action lawsuit filed by over 5,000 of the newspaper’s carriers. The suit concerned the carrier’s employment status within the company; as so-called independent contractors, they are not eligible for overtime pay or mileage compensation. The settlement will not require Freedom Communications to change the carriers’ status. Instead, the company will only pay the plaintiffs up to $22 million in compensation for the workers’ lost wages and attorneys’ fees. The suit comes at a bad time for the Orange County Register, which has already been through four rounds of layoffs in the last year.
