Employers around the country are getting ready for changes to the Americans with Disabilities Act to go into effect. The amendment to the 1990 piece of legislation was signed by President George Bush in September 2008 and will become effective in January 2009. The amendment was written to broaden some key terms and phrases in the original act, making it easier for employees with disabilities to receive fair treatment in their workplaces. One major change involves the addition of impairments to major life activities to the list of protected disabilities, which previously only listed impairments to major life functions. Examples of major life functions include lifting, standing, and reading, while major life activities are more complex behaviors such as walking, learning, and speech.
If your or a loved one has experienced workplace discrimination based on a disability, the changes to the ADA may benefit you. To learn more about your legal options, contact the New York City disability lawyers Cary Kane at 212-868-6300.
