VA Company Settles Discrimination Suit

October 27th, 2008 · No Comments

Estes Express Lines, a trucking company based in Virginia, has agreed to settle the racial discrimination lawsuit filed by former employee Morris Young of Richland, Mississippi. According the the lawsuit, Young was suspended from his job in May 2005 following accusations that he had stolen tobacco from a shipment to the dock where he worked. It was later discovered that the actual thief was a white employee who had accused Young. In spite of this new development, Young’s suspension continued while the guilty employee was not punished. Young was later fired, and his alleged crime was even reported to authorities by his former employer, even though they had not fully investigated the matter.

Estes has agreed to settle the EEOC’s lawsuit against them with a payment of $175,000 in compensation to Young for the ordeal he experienced. The company has also agreed to educate its employees and train in managers in prevention of future racial discrimination.
