Employment of Older Americans Rising

August 14th, 2008 · No Comments

Between 1977 and 2007 there has been a 101% growth in workers over 65 years of age in the United States. It is predicted that an 80% increase can be expected for 2016. The Statistical Office of US Labor Department says this shift should be expected due to a tightening economy, lower birth rate, and higher life expectancy.

There has been 175% increase of workers over the age of 75. However, they represent a mere .8% of the total workforce. The majority of elderly workers are full time and although traditionally, there has been a wage gap between them and their younger colleagues, it is improving.
